Well, I know if you’re a small business & you see CVS or Target bragging about their mObile app & you think to yourself, “Gee that soft serve ice cream looks so much better than my multi-flavored generic ice pop”, [groan]. Here’s where most business owners are led astray by marketing gurus. Just like they were promised big things with SEO, a mObile app creator or reseller will say it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. Of course they’ll also use the famous line…”The app market is exploding right now!” So, they pay 3000-$5000 to get their mObile app up & running & only 22 out of 500 people have actually downloaded it, & kept it on their phone for more than 30 days. (keep in mind big companies have spent in the hundreds of thousands to build & maintain their mObile apps) These are high end doctor practices like plastic surgery, cosmetic dentistry, & chiropractors that I see get taken all the time. People don’t realize that there are monthly fees associated with keeping your mObile apps in the app stores. Not to mention that they must be updated periodically or else they get outdated like a website. In fact, Facebook just announced they will roll out updates every 4 to 8 weeks for their mObile apps.
The whole point of all this is that you need to think about your ideal customer or client. Do they even have smart phones? Does a small majority have smart phones? Do they prefer SMS, or just a sleek optimized mObile website? mObile websites are completely underrated right now. The almighty HTML5 is coming on slowly but surely. Like I wrote before I think this technology is: silent & deadly. When the Financial Times of London announces they’re no longer going to support their native mObile apps to favor a more streamlined HTML5 experience, something should click in your brain.
