McDonald’s has embraced the Olympics with a nice mObile app that can be used in the great city of London.  They have now hit 1 million app downloads!  Hooray!  I know what you’re thinking…I write about not building mObile apps & now I’m congratulating them?  Let me explain…

I’m glad that McDonald’s is on the mObile bandwagon because they are a giant International Corporation which can handle the development/maintenance costs of building & maintaining a mObile app.  For Joe’s Pizza, it doesn’t make that much sense to build one.  McDonald’s mObile app can be used for locating restaurants, nutrition information, view the full menu, & you can find the latest offers & promotions.  The app can also deliver push notifications to trigger repeat visits from customers.

McDonald’s also built a decent mObile website & the traffic has been steadily increasing to more than 10 million visitors since July.  They hit the nail on the head when they created their mObile site, except for one thing:  no SMS Opt In Form or Text Call To Action.  I would still like to see them embrace SMS marketing but I don’t think they will do it.  They want to keep everything within the mObile app.  I still think they’re leaving money on the table as they could easily send offers & coupons through SMS & MMS.  Not everyone has a smart phone, so I think it’s wise to include everybody.

On another note, they also started putting QR Codes on all their products at the Olympic games which leads to nutritional information about the products you’re eating.  It will be rolled out to the rest of the UK & world wide by the end of 2013.

So, in conclusion, McDonald’s has got the mObile app, the mObile website, & QR Codes.  I would still like to see some SMS/MMS marketing because they certainly can afford it, but all in all I give them an Olympic Gold!  At least they’re really making a broad effort to try & get customers into the funnel.  I can’t say that for many other brands.
