Since it’s the end of the year, I thought I’d stay in season & write about an awesome Christmas mObile marketing FAIL. This one comes to us from the Atlanta Botanical Gardens whom was advertising within the Accuweather mObile webpage. As you can see on the <<= left, they have a great mObile web ad, & of course it’s location specific. I thought to myself “Hey, I like Holiday Lights, Lemme SEEEE!” As soon as I click or touch the ad, it takes me to a great site. It appears to be the ABG sales page/info page of the Garden Lights extravaganza. (See below picture)
For such a great contextual mobile web ad, I would think the ABG would take the time to add a mObile optimized landing page. To be honest it was such a big let down because the full website does not do this thing justice on a smartphone. Pinching & Zooming was not easy or pleasant at all. Plus, trying to get through the Garden Lights slideshow was a bit of a nightmare. Have you ever tried to zoom & click next in a slideshow on a site that’s not mObile optimized?! A few suggestions to the ABG:
1) Capitalize On Your mObile Web Ad Context by optimizing your landing page.
2) Make The Slideshow of the Garden Lights Show Easy To Display On mObile Smartphones. That’s the MoneyMaker, That’s What Should Be Highlighted As It Is On the Full Website.
3) There’s Also a PDF Download of the Garden Lights Event Map. This could be mObile optimized by uploading a decent JPG that loads fast & displays well. After all, it’s only a 1 page PDF so that image could be downsized & easily seen.
4) As a bonus, mobilize some of those press & youtube videos to further solidify the sales process.
For such an elaborate operation as this, I’d think spending an hour & maybe a few hundred bucks getting a decent mObile optimized landing page would be worth it. After all, they only spend 9months a year working on this thing!!! On a lighter note, I wish everyone happy holidays & I do hope to make it out to see the Garden Lights this year!
What do you think? Do non-mObile optimized websites annoy you?
